Digital Specifications FAQ
How should I save my files?
Save your files as:
- TIF/TIFF or JPG/JPEG format
- Distinctive file names no longer than 32 characters
- No characters in file names other than A-Z, 0-9, #, -, _, and spaces.
- 8-bit mode
- Flattened layers
- Cropped/sized in ratio for the final print (done in LabLink if you use it)
- RGB color management (not CMYK)
How can I submit images?
The easiest way is to use our StudioLabLink software, and send the order and the images in over the internet. If you do not have a broadband connection you can burn the images onto a CD or DVD. Black & White images should be placed in a different folder from color images for improved print quality.
When creating a black & white from a color image should I use Grayscale mode?
No, you should use Hue/Saturation and reduce the Saturation to -100.
Do I need a negative made to have prints made from my digital image files?
No, you can have your digital files printed directly without having a negative.
What size does my file need to be to get a good Digital print?
This will depend on your desired final print size. For the best results for prints 12x18 and smaller use a dpi of 300. For large prints use a dpi of 250.
Doing this will also insure that your image will not be cropped in printing. Results are based on using our scanners, results may vary with your personal scans.
Why doesn't my Digital print match my inkjet print that I sent along for a color match?
There are great differences between inkjet printing technology and Digital photograph printing technology. The Digital printer uses photographic paper and does not use ink. Therefore we will never be able to truly match an inkjet print.
Why doesn't my Digital print match my original proof print from the negative?
Even though the Digital printer and the proof printer share the same RA-4 chemistry and Portra photographic paper stock they do not share the same light source when printing their image.
What finishing services can be done on Digital prints?
Digital prints are printed on PORTRA photographic paper, so all normal services are available, Spray, Texturing, Canvassing, etc. See our complete Digital Catalog for complete details.
